CHAPTER 13

It was getting late, and although Mike knew he should go home, what he felt compelled to do was see if he could locate Miguel Rodriguez on one of the databases the Sheriff’s Office maintained for use on occasions such as this one.

He knew he’d never be able to sleep tonight if he didn’t try, and would probably spend most of the night looking online to see if he could find something out about the investigator, so he decided to go to the office and get it over with.

He’d called Kelly on his way to the station and told her he’d be late, which didn’t surprise her in the least. She well knew the importance of gathering as much information about a case as quickly as possible following a murder.

Mike nodded to a few of his deputies who were still at their desks as he quickly walked to his office, hunger pangs reminding him that only the search for Miguel Rodriguez should be done and that everything else could wait.

He sat down at his desk and decided to begin with the low-hanging fruit, just typing in Miguel’s name and seeing if he got a hit. If not, he could start the laborious process of going through the Sheriff’s Department’s databases, but he knew that would take time.

Mike couldn’t believe his luck. He got several hits and with the first one he clicked on he got the man’s phone number, business address, and his background. He’d been a private investigator for ten years, but had only recently moved to Cedar Bay, which Mike thought was probably the reason he’d never heard Miguel’s name before.

He called the telephone number given, and a moment later the call was answered. “This is Miguel Rodriguez. How may I help you?”

“Mr. Rodriguez, this is Sheriff Mike Reynolds. I was given your name by a person who prefers to remain anonymous and was told you may have done some investigation work for a man named Eric Reilly. The work consisted of investigating his wife, Sophia Reilly. Can you help me with that?”

“Probably not. I’m sure you’re aware that there is a confidentiality agreement between an employer and a private investigator.”

“Well, since you answered my question by saying probably not, I’m inferring that you did do work for him. Here’s my problem, Miguel. Sophia Reilly was murdered either late last night or early this morning. So far, I have really nothing to go on other than rumors of affairs that she might have had. I could sure use your help with this. Naturally, I would not use your name regarding any information you gave me.”

Miguel was quiet for several moments. “I’m sorry to hear that. Is Eric Reilly a suspect?”

Strange he would ask me that, Mike thought.

“Mr. Rodriguez, at this moment everyone who knew the woman is a suspect. Plus, as you well know, spouses are always pretty high up on the suspect list unless they have an airtight alibi.”

“Since you didn’t finish the sentence by saying ‘and he did,’ I’m assuming he didn’t.
